Plasmodium invades the red blood cells and changes the hemoglobin into a dark brown particle that is deposited within the mature Plasmodium dead body. When the Plasmodium dies, the red blood cells are destroyed and the pigment is phagocytosed by the reticuloendothelial cells in the body. Commonly found in the reticuloendothelial cells of the liver, spleen and other organs.

Malaria pigment removal solution is used to remove malaria pigment for better observation of Plasmodium for 15 minutes or more.
