The purpose of fixation is to preserve the original morphology and structure of cells and tissues, and fixatives can prevent autolysis of endogenous lysosomal enzymes on their own tissues and cells, and inhibit the growth of bacteria and mycobacteria. Mercury-based fixatives, especially those containing mercuric chloride, must be stripped of mercury pigment after fixation.

The Mercury Pigment Decolorization Kit can be used to decolorize most mercury pigments.
