Neutral red acts as a pH indicator, changing from red to yellow between pH 6.4 and 8.0. In neutral or slightly alkaline environment, living cells of plants can absorb a large number of neutral red and excrete into vacuoles. Neutral Red Solution,0.5% can be used as a red nuclear counterstain in various histological procedures.
